Starter cultures for silage
Lactobacillus(LAB) and Bacillus(BAC) inoculants, are used to improve the fermentation, to minimize forage losses, and increase the animals performance. According to the results of about 1550 independent research works carried out in North America and Europe inoculated silage has improved in comparison to non–treated silage in the following parameters:
- Lower pH values,
- Less dry matter losses
- Less ammonia,
- High lactic acid in lactic/acetic acid ratio
Sim Silaj is a pure Bacillus subtilis strain. Sim Silaj is isolated from silage and is therefore a natural culture.
1 g Sim Silaj contains 1,7x109live Bacillus subtilis KUEN 1581 spores.

Low pH and high levels of lactic acid prevent the forage from becoming contaminated by pathogenic microorganisms and minimize dry matter losses.
Less dry matter losses ensure a higher degree of forage utilization.
LAB inoculants increase the digestibility and feed conversion of forage and improve the following performance parameters of animals: weight gain, milk yield, feed conversion.
Bacillus subtilis spores shorten the silage fermentation time by sprouting rapidly, lowering the pH and continuing its activity even at low pH values.
Standardized, guaranteed, and quality forage is the end product.
Sim Silaj, application and dosage
Trials and field applications over the years have proven that 25-30% of the inoculants used do not give the desired results. The main reason for a weaker performance is due to lower activity and quality than expected in dry formulations. The drying, packaging, and activation by rehydration processes before utilization kill some of the beneficial bacteria. The water used in the activation process of the bacteria is especially important (chlorine and salt contents, temperature) and field applications are prone to mistakes. To prevent the afore mentioned problems, Sim Silaj is in liquid form and can be directly applied on forage. It can be applied either during the grinding of the forage or at the time of filling up the silo by evenly spraying.
LAB inoculants should be added at 1-5 106 CFU per 1 g of silage material. Sim Silaj has 1,7 109 live Bacillus subtilis spores in 1 gram. 1 litre of Sim Silaj is used to inoculate 2 tonnes of forage.
